You have to place the furniture outside though. The items cannot be in a bag, they have to be in your main inventory. There are some hammers that works only as weapon, maybe that's the problem. Nails and planks are needed. Unless you plan on barricading with metal sheets, in which case you’ll need a welders mask, a propane torch and a metal sheet.A friend and I've set up a base in a large warehouse, we barricaded everything and cleared all zombies in the area.
