Description: In the early part of World War II, 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry were interned in relocation centers by Executive Order No. 9066 issued February 19, 1942. Manzanar, the first of ten such concentration camps, was bounded by barbed wire and guard towers. It confined ten thousand persons, the majority of them American citizens.The Relocation Center, and the entirety of the Japanese American internment during World War II, is one of the darkest chapters in American history. Ansel Adams and the Museum of Modern Art created and hosted an exhibition, “Born Free and Equal.” that opened in November 1944, 75 years ago, with significant controversy.
