Refrigerant (R-12, R-134, Duracool, whatever) is too expensive to test things out with. A decent set of gauges can be had for around $50.This is a BIG weakness in this tractor. Many consider the JD 2840 to be the next worst tractor JD made behind the JD 2010. Great engine but weak clutch and Hi-Lo issues. Kind of a run Forrest run type of tractor if bought used. I'm working on the air condition on a 4040 John Deere tractor and I have been having this problem when I charge with the R134 refrigerant. the gauge on the low or suction side is about 22 the hi side is about 320. everything is new .hoses ,evaporator , condenser , Expansion Valve and the compressor .Change the air filter parts with a fresh one if the filter is jammed. 6.
