Beastlords pair well with dps classes. A raid equiped beastlord can facetank, because slow. It just takes a while. My biggest problem with them is that they are fiddly, having to click a billion things all the time. The 73 pet is so much weaker compared to the mobs you're facing at that lvl. I wouldn't really call that an easier way. You'd need to change all of the beastlord pet summoning spells as well as the data in the pets and npc_types tables to match to get around the name check in the code.
