May 3, 2012 · Purchased a new / used Colt 1911 Mk IV Series 70 about a month ago.....got a call from my gun shop yesterday wanting to re-check the serial number on the gun. He said he received a call from the State Police inquiring about the number as they had thought he got it wrong in the paperwork. Seems the gun was made between 81 - 83 and the number ... I was recently informed that Colt discontinued Serial Numbering their slides on Service Model Aces at serial SM3836. ... From "Colt .45 Government Models", "Slides were serial numbered under the firing pin stop through serial number SM 3836." I believe this same information is found in his "big book".
