Technically 307s are "medium" journal as far as SBC's go. They're larger than the early small journal stuff, but smaller than the 400. Actually swapped my 350 for a 327. Also like the 307 more than the 305. The 327 were the only one that stayed with me and probably wont get rid of them. I still want to take a 400 block and 327 crank and make a 348. Basically the older W348 internal specs but in a smaller sbc package and have the worlds access to heads , intakes , cams etc ...if your casting # on the block is 3970020 you can bore it to 4 inch. I would still do a sonic test before I spent any money on machine work. We had one in the shop last year and the guy wated to bore it .060 over and after a sonic test it was only safe at .030 over bore as one cylinder was thin on one side. I thought this through and realized a 350 had more cubes, a bigger bore (to allow for bigger valved, better heads) and was cheaper to build.From there on, the only way for additional size increases is through stroking. Conventional stroking methods run out for the 283 Chevy at 352 cubic inches. The figure is obtained with a 4 inch bore and ½ inch stroke increase over the stock 3 inch figure."
